Now Hiring: Scientists, Not Science Teachers
Scientists and kids ask the same questions. Why are we here? Are we alone in the universe? How can we travel through time?
90% of middle school science teachers didn’t take the subject past a high school level; they only know how to teach to the curriculum. Theoretical physicist Lawrence Krauss believes that you need to explore the broader questions with students, and be comfortable and confident enough in your science background to do so.
Teachers must be motivated to go beyond the normal boundaries of physics and chemistry, and what’s a stronger motivation than cash? Krauss says science and math are not necessarily more important than other subjects, but if you have training in science, you could be making much more money in a profession other than teaching. Those are the type of people who are more comfortable stepping over the curriculum line. So, throw them a little more “Au” and “Ag”.
