E-Migration: Migrants in the Digital Age
Immigration used to involve packing an entire life into a suitcase and moving to a new country for good. With modern communications and transport, immigration is far more fluid and dynamic. Modern migrants don’t need to lose contact with their old homes; families can span the globe, children can be schooled abroad, and migrants can live across multiple worlds.
The old assumptions about immigration known as Ellis’ Island model of arrival, settlement and assimilation, are dissolving fast. David Blunkett, Robert Winder, Sarfraz Manzoor and Dr Titi Banjoko debate how modern mobility is changing human attitudes to integration, identity and belonging.
