Anxiety is a Good Thing, I Promise
Quarterly review with your boss? Big presentation to the firm? Econ test to study for?
“I can’t sleep!”
Anxiety is the result of your sympathetic nervous system, or “fight or flight” system. It gives you adrenaline that you use for example, in dire situations (fires, floods, free samples at Costco). More blood goes to your heart and lungs, your pupils dilate–it makes sure things get done, especially on deadlines.
To counter that, you have your parasympathetic system, otherwise we’d be walking around frantic 24/7. Those who don’t have a strong parasympathetic system are those with chronic anxiety and stress. This unfortunately damages cells and alters brain chemistry. Not only does this affect sleep and mood, but 99% of ailments are caused by stress, including heart disease and diabetes.
So keep exercising, do yoga, keep your head cool. Anxiety can be a helpful force at times, but balance it out with your inner Bob Marley.
