How Hacktivism is Defining a Generation

According to the “Electrohippes”, their aim was to bring “community accountability to the Internet…governments and corporations are setting up stalls on the Net in the expectation that the space is immune from the normal pressure present in society… but it isn’t… we have to treat cyberspace as if it were another part of society.”

Transforming a Generation

In light of these instances, hactivism has proven to be a movement effective at manipulating and warping existing systems, such as governments, societal norms, technological advances, and corporate influence. [pullquote]It is a movement of placeless participation, a story of code and its controllers – be they idealists, anarchists or extremists.[/pullquote]

Hacktivism is transforming the next generation’s notion of what activism can be and what it can entail. With the recent hack into the BBC twitter account by the Syrian Electronic Army, there remain questions as to the extent of the power of hactivism. What other ends can it meet? What possibilities are still uncovered?
