Debate on introducing the “Royal” prefix into the Canadian military
The government has decided to bring back the ‘Royal’ prefix into the Navy and Air Forces titles, and since it is already there it has decided it might as well throw the Military into the mix as well.
It has been 40+ years since the ‘Royal’ was taken out in 1968 to unify the three branches under the ‘Canadian Armed Forces’ denomination. But it seems that to restore “an important and recognizable part of Canada’s military heritage” the government has decided this is the right move.
As you can imagine, this has already ignited debate from all political and interested sides. Some see it as a patriotic move, others denounce it as a backwards step.
What do you guys think? Are we “connecting with the glorious history of the military…and of the other entities” or renouncing our autonomous identity? Words like ‘Tradition’ and ‘Heritage’ are being passed around by some; while others use words like ‘Divisive’ and ‘Backwards’.
What are your thoughts? Enjoy!
