COLLEGE CONSPIRACY

DO YOU HAVE AN EXPECTATION OF A SUCCESSFUL FUTURE SIMPLY BY OBTAINING A UNIVERSITY DEGREE? According to the National Inflation Association those expectations that have so adamantly been ingrained in us may just be pipe dreams!

The main problem has to do with the massive debt that students must assimilate in order to get a University Degree.  Because of vague laws that, among other things, allow banks to give loans to any 18 year old without even asking if they have a job, the student debt in the U.S. has reached staggering levels…and apparently, the tax-payers may be the ones who end up picking up the cheque.

The video challenges the U.S. government’s role in the education system.  It questions policies like the “no child left behind” policy, which it claims has left the education system in shambles, plagued with teachers unable to think outside the box and to teach their students how to run a business or invent something.  Essentially, they are not teaching us how to “become educated about things without attending college”.  Therefore students become convinced that they have to cough up at least 27,000 dollars for an average four year program – up 29% from five years ago plus text-books – in order to find some success in life…

In harsher words, contemporary students are described by some in the video as “indentured servants”…even the quality of the education goes under fire.

It is definitely an interesting video to watch, with controversial out-views and titillating arguments.  It can really lead us to ask whether university education is actually taking away from our ability to think for ourselves, and if really we are just becoming drones with a mediocre education?

The solutions proposed are also sure to ignite discussion.  For my part, I ask whether the issue of education should really be tackled from a business strategy point of view – whether the answer is in monetary policy, as the video suggests, or on stronger public funding and governmental intervention.

Watch and enjoy.  And be sure to share your thoughts and comments!
