Drought in the Horn of Africa

Sourced From: Earth Times

The Horn of Africa is known for its beauty, its culture, and many other enriching aspects.  Unfortunately, it is also known for political, economic and social unrest, as well as a history of military violence and oppression.  To worsen things, the region is also known for its drastic weather patterns, and in the last few years, the Horn of Africa has experienced one of the worst droughts in over six decades.

Refugee camps are commonplace in the region, but one in particular – the Daabab refugee camp in Kenya – has been accommodating people for decades.  Many people have grown up there, and now in their adulthood are helping others either enter the camp or cope with the harsh life inside it.  But the camp is swelling beyond recognition due to the amount of time it has been around, plus the recent influx of Somalians attempting to enter the camp to escape the murderous desert that has ravaged livestock and which has people in its sights.  People walking for days, despite their age and health, are now having trouble entering the camp whilst simultaneously attempting to escape the drought.  Some of those that do get inside the camps receive enough supplies for only about two weeks, and then, as the reporter says, “they are on their own”.

The video tries to delve into what is causing these sinister weather patterns – presumably, global warming – and what is the role of the military and political conflict in the area in exacerbating this humanitarian crisis.  What can be done now?  But also, what can be done for the long term are important questions trying to be answered here.
